MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH & pARENTAL cOUNSELLING
Parenting can be both rewarding and hard. D.W. Winnicott once wrote: “ There is no such thing as a baby, there is a baby and someone ”. That is why the psychological well-being of the primary care-giver is important in facilitating child rearing.
Maternal mental health is preventative work where the focus is on helping expectant mothers and mothers with babies (under age 5) to bond with their babies. I help mothers:
· Mentalize and think about their babies to facilitate the development of a healthy attachment.
· Cope with difficult feelings that are part of juggling child rearing whilst pursuing a career
· Cope with loss due to miscarriages/ fertility problems
· Post-Partum Depression
In parental counselling I provide guidance and support to parents that have children that are presenting with mental health problems. This is a space where parents can safely talk about the difficulties of parenting and direct guidance is offered in how they can support their children’s psychological well-being.
